With this project, the Local News Data Hub produced national and local stories exploring which municipalities in Canada have the highest proportion of people 65 or older and how prepared those places are to support a large older adult population.
We looked at 111 municipalities with 10,000 people or more and where older adults make up at least 25 per cent of the population. We used Statistics Canada’s 2022 population estimates for our analysis.
We spoke with organizations, local politicians, residents and researchers to help us understand the challenges and benefits experienced by older adults in each municipality we wrote about.
