With this project, the Local News Data Hub produced national and local stories exploring where in Canada income inequality is most pronounced and what that inequality looks like on the ground.
To compare disparities between high- and low-income earners at the local level, we ranked the country’s 418 municipalities with more than 10,000 people using Statistics Canada’s 2020 Gini index for adjusted after-tax household income. The national ranking points to significant variations among communities.
We spoke with organizations, local residents and researchers to help us understand the unique situation in each municipality we wrote about.
